Environmental Management
Clearly the earth is groaning under the weight of rapid development everywhere. This statement probably synthesizes the importance of environmental management especially in the context of development studies. The reverse of development is either preservation, conservation or rejuvenation (reforestation, species repopulation, ecosystem restoration). This can take many forms of technical structures revolving around legal, monetary and regulations. There are both public and private interests in development and many of these are also transnational and transboundary. The existence of multilateral bodies and agencies help but are limited in powers not scope. Environmental management also involves intergenerational responsibility, especially as geological time far exceeds the typical human lifespan, notwithstanding the irreversible environmental damage wrought by development. The new buzzwords of sustainability and renewable resources are invigorating and promising. However, it is still in its infancy stages with many stops and starts. This module will shed light on the enormity of the work needed for effective environmental management and at best, showcase successful development projects implemented with environmental care
